Commuters travelling in first-class, AC-2, AC-3, AC chair car and AC economy class will have to shell out a little more money from July 1 due to the roll out of Goods and Services Tax(GST). The rate of GST shall be 5% on total fare in comparision to existing 4.5% service tax, an increase of 0.5%. However, commuters travelling in second class coaches will cost the same. Similarly, GST on transport of goods by rail will be 5% in place of 4.5% service tax earlier with exemption for essential goods like milk and agricultural produce. Catering charges of Rail Neer will also remain unchanged after the implementation of GST.
